Tasman Keith, one of Australia’s most respected new artists, today releases his debut album, A Colour Undone. A multi-faceted listen, seamlessly combining elements of rap, pop, R&B, soul, and more featuring contributions from Genesis Owusu, Jessica Mauboy and more.
A Colour Undone ruminates on love, loss, trauma and healing through metaphor and Tasman’s lived experience. It’s both a break-up record and a recount of processing his own trauma being raised in one of Australia’s most notorious missions (Bowraville). At the risk of simplifying the significance of his meteoric rise in Australia: his presence as a First Nations person of color in a mainly white Hip Hop scene is palpable; necessary.
Speaking to what this moment means for him, Tasman shares, “’A Colour Undone’ is the undoing of myself, expectations, ego, envy and all the unhealthy external things that you need to rid yourself to be fulfilled internally. This album is me at my most open, my most vulnerable, my most powerful and my most confident. I don’t have the words to express what releasing it means to me, I just know this moment is something I’ve been working towards my entire life so it will take a minute to process this exact moment. I hope the listener finds comfort, and uncomfortably in the record. Undoing everything to become my complete self was the goal, and it forever will be. It’s all in the album for you to hear. Find peace before you rest in it.”
From the frenetic, industrial production of opener ‘WATCH UR STEP’, to the noxious, corrupting braggadocio of ‘CHEQUE ft. Genesis Owusu’ and ‘NOT 4 SAFETY ft. Kwame’ to the dawning clarity of ‘LOVE TOO SOON’ and ‘HOW 2 LEAVE ft. Thandi Phoenix’, Tasman’s artistic frame widens throughout A Colour Undone, spreading across soul, funk, jazz, hard rap and more. Through his deeply introspective debut, Tasman asks questions of healing and trauma with trepidation and valor, reaching its height on the closing track ‘TREAD LIGHT’. Replete with scathing commentary, ‘TREAD LIGHT’ gives vivid imagery and a direct window into Tasman’s reality. The motivation to “turn our Stolen into golden” is endured tirelessly.
Over the last few years, Tasman has swept Australian press with rave reviews including The Guardian, NME, Complex, Rolling Stone, triple j, and more, while also making a splash worldwide with early fans at WNYC, Consequence, COLORS, Billboard, among others. As dexterous, clever, and linguistically adventurous as it is emotionally resonant, Tasman’s message & music are quickly making him an essential artist to watch.
